So, just what exactly is tooth bonding? Also called cosmetic contouring, tooth bonding uses a putty-like resin on your teeth to mold them into a more aesthetically pleasing shape. It’s similar to how a sculptor works with clay. The resin is applied directly to your tooth and then hardened using UV light. Then we’ll polish it so that it blends in perfectly with your smile. It takes about 30 minutes to an hour to bond a single tooth. Before we start the tooth shaping and bonding process though, we’ll give you a thorough cleaning and prep your teeth using a special solution that will help the resin bond. Once we’re done, your newly bonded tooth will match perfectly with the rest of your smile!
As we mentioned, tooth shaping can be used for a variety of issues, including things like minor chips and stubborn staining. Many patients are good candidates for the procedure, but it shouldn’t be used if you have cavities and other oral health issues, or orthodontic issues like multiple crooked teeth or a malpositioned jaw. We’re happy to go over your options at your appointment to find a treatment that works for you.
If you are a good candidate for dental bonding, we’ll also go over how to care for your bonded teeth. Most of them are things you likely already do – brush and floss regularly and make sure to come in for regular 6-month check-ups and cleanings. One thing that may be a little trickier is cutting back on things that can stain your bonded teeth, like coffee, tea, wine, and other foods and beverages. We know, we know. That’s no fun! If you can’t cut back on your daily cup-o-Joe or other stain-causing culprits, just make sure to brush or rinse your mouth after drinking it to prevent stains. With proper care, your dental bonding can last up to 10 years.
As you can probably tell, we do things a little differently than other dental offices – and not only because of our fun amenities!
