There are many reasons why patients don’t like metal braces – and trust us, we get it. It’s more than the bulk and the adjustments; metal braces are quite honestly, a bit of a pain. You need a more stringent oral hygiene program and may have to avoid certain foods entirely. Then there are issues like developing staining on your teeth and hidden cavities. And let’s not forget that they’re not the most discreet. Many patients simply don’t care for the way they look. Whatever your reasons for not wanting metal braces, Invisalign is an exciting alternative!
Invisalign uses a series of clear aligners made from plastic to gradually shift your teeth into the proper position. They look very similar to a mouthguard and are custom created for your mouth. We use iTero digital impressions to create your aligners, so you won’t have to deal with any messy, gaggy goop. Once your aligners are ready, you’ll wear each set for about 2 weeks, and then switch it out for the next in the series. Most Barton Creek patients need about 20-24 aligners to complete treatment, which means you can have a straighter smile in as little as a year! And since they’re removable, they make eating and oral hygiene a breeze. There’s no need to change your diet or buy specialized toothbrushes. Just brush, floss, pop in your aligner, and go.
Although the aligners can be used for many minor to moderate alignment issues, they can’t be used for severe issues like open bites, significant overbites or underbites, or extremely crowded or crooked teeth. In these cases, traditional braces are a better option. If you’re a good candidate for the aligners, you will need to wear them for most of the day. Ideally, they should be worn for 22+ hours of the day, only removing them to eat, drink, brush, and floss. That may sound a little daunting at first but remember – traditional braces are on 24/7, sometimes for 24 months or more. Making a commitment to wearing the aligners most of your day will help you stay on track for a straight smile within a year.
